Oh, the silhouette of this dress? It's called "empire-waisted bell" and it flatters approximately no one.
Do baptisms seriously stress anyone else out or am I the only crazycake that makes an Everest out of a speedbump? I can never find the gown (in the heating vent this time ... thank you, dear Sebastian) until the 11th hour, Mom's still in that terrible in-between clothing/swollen face stage, there's the worry that the baby be attacked by a case of the audible hangries during the blessed event, the heathen should probably be bathed prior to the big day, and "coffee and donuts at our house afterward" turns into a stupidly early wake up to make a mediocre breakfast casserole + failed (but time consuming) cinnamon rolls + we might not have enough orange juice, and the more you want to focus on the sacrame- we definitely don't have enough orange juice - distractions consume and consume some more.
They even get the best of Simon Stressed Never Patton. By the time the homily rolled around, he had leaned over and asked, "how is this going to work?" three separate times because the thought of heaving all three kids up to the altar in the middle of Mass must've not exactly screamed, "feasible" to Mr. Worrynot.
Luckily, Mr. Lipless did great ...
while the other kids were okay. Julia didn't didn't freak the freak out when we made her hurriedly march up with only one shoe on, and Sebastian was oddly calm and didn't pull my hair once or let on that he was wearing one white sock and one blue sock.
Theo's godparents are super skilled in all parenting arenas and trained their three other children to quietly stay in the pew with their shoes on ... we're hoping they give us lessons ... soon. They also saved us from an orange juice famine and brought champagne. Best of the best.
All that worry for almost nothing and we've got a shiny new Christian on our hands. I would ask for an Alleluia but .... tis not the season.
it's not about Mom but ...
dress - Goodwill (altered)
plums - Kohl's
shoes - c/o Blowfish
Mass Behavior:
Julia - B
Sebastian - B
Theo - A

Aww, hi Puthoffs! And I love your dress! Last baptism in our family prompted an emergency trip to Jc Penney, which ended with a redfaced trip to the shapewear section.
ReplyDeleteHeathenism never looked good on you anyway, Theo.
ReplyDeleteBut, that white number and that smile? Working.
Congrats, Buddy!
You look, awesome Grace! Great dress!
ReplyDeleteThat extra comma was accidental...
DeleteLove the tights and shoes, and I'm with you on the stressful baptisms - you want to get them baptized early enough that you're not constantly thinking, "What if something happens and I DIDN'T GET THE BABY BAPTIZED BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE SKINNY FOR THE PICTURES?!" Which is why, shockingly enough, none of our family baptism pictures grace the walls of our house...
ReplyDeleteWhat did Theo do to drop from his usual A+ down to an A?! Poor baby, he must have whimpered for 1.4 seconds :(
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit :)
You look SO much nicer than I did at my daughter's baptism. I bought a special dress just for the occasion, but my mom forgot to tell me when I tried it on that it emphasized the huge blimp that was my postpartum belly. You look ravishing and I do actually think the dress looks great on you. (I've noticed you seem to down-talk outfits that look amazing on you.)
ReplyDeleteYay for Theo! And for Theo's mummy for holding it all together!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Theo! And don't you just love chrism smell on a baby?! (Until it wears off after a couple days and becomes a chrism/spit-up which is less stellar...)
ReplyDeleteI love those tights, and that dress isn't as bad on you as you think. Pretty cute, really.
ReplyDeleteI freak over baptisms, too. I always plan a party when I'm pregnant and then realise that I was nuts to think I could throw a party at a week postpartum, and we never have one. Then there is the Keep the Mother-in-Law in Chicago battle, because my atheist MIL always develops an obsession with coming to the baptism, and she is not the kind of lady you can hostess a week after you've had a baby. So yes, I am usually a freaked out freak by the time the little heathen finally makes it to the font.
Welcome to the Church, Theo!
You are such a liar! You look lovely in that dress and I am totally stealing the tights and shoe color combo idea. I am so glad that you survived your third baptism and there is a new Patton in the Church!! Yay Theo!!
ReplyDeleteAs for running out of OJ...been there done that...about a million times in the last 24 years of married life. Now I always have too much (a psychological condition garnered from years of party failures) and we end up feeding half the neighborhood for a week with the leftovers. Ah well...one day I will get it right.
Happy Baptism Day Mama!! You survived. No go to bed and take a nap :)
Dear Grace,
ReplyDeleteYou are beautiful and I love that dress and the tights!
Sincerely,
Forever Jealous Of Your Amazing Hair
"empire-waisted bell" totally flattering and adorable. As is Theo's sweet lipless smile!
ReplyDeleteI love Julia's little head looking past the Baptismal font.
ReplyDeletecongrats on the newly baptized catholic! you look great!!
ReplyDeleteI must find a pair of burgundy tights! Anyways, they look great with the navy and wedges. Congratulations on the baptism!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know you could have a baptism during Lent! You look awesome, and for not having any lips, Theo still manages to have the cutest smile ever!
ReplyDeleteThe Pioneer Woman's cinnamon rolls? REALLY? Are you trying to shave time off of Purgatory???? I mean, I'm impressed, but whoa. Congrats on the new Christian!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Your outfit looks great (of course), but I'm also struck by the altarpiece in the picture of the baptism-- it makes my little medievalist heart go pitter-pat.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Theo! You look absolutely beautiful. Baptism parties are so stressful. At my daughter's party in September I was so busy running around filling champagne glasses that I forgot feed the baby and ended up leaking milk all over my dress. The classiest. Postpartum hosting should be worth at least one plenary indulgence, maybe even two.
ReplyDeleteI actually think that dress is beautiful and you look great!
ReplyDeleteBoth our boys' baptisms have been accompanied by super blowouts, so the whole time all I could think was how to hold the baby so that the poop didn't escape. Also, best godparents there ;)
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty -- elegant but current. If only I ever looked that slim and lovely at our family baptisms!
ReplyDeleteI am with you on the stress. Baptisms are the only time we have our parties out at a restaurant. I cannot manage hosting with a newborn and the nursing and the sleeplessness...oh heavens, Grace, God bless you.
Enjoy your new Christian. Smell the chrism for me!
Even after 7 baptisms, we still haven't learned that you should have the baby baptized, but wait another 6 mos to have the party. Stresssssssful!
ReplyDeleteThe entire Camp looks beautiful! Congrats!
After surviving our daughter screaming her loudest through her entire baptism, and then taking exactly zero pictures, my husband and I keep comforting ourselves with, at least it was effective." In the end, that's what counts. :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Church, Theo!
And you look great!
Hi. I'm a new reader (loving this blog!) I completely agree with Michelle. Post-partum having-to-stand-up-in-front-of-a-bunch-of-people-and-try-to-look-at-least-somewhat-presentable is cause for indulgence of some kind.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I think you look fab, and I wish I had a nickle's worth of the style sense you do.
Happy Baptism Day, Theo!!
Baptisms are my absolute favorite day, ever. You look so classy - the pearls are lovely - and happy. That's what counts, dear Grace!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! Welcome to the family, Theo! and yes, baptism days are the most stressful. with my first, I spent most the day crying in the back room while nursing the ravenous baby. our last had the hangries and every picture he was screaming red :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful Sunday! Love the dress!
ReplyDeletecongrats sweet Theo and welcome to our amazing faith! Glad everything turned out fine...you look amazing in that dress!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Church Theo!
ReplyDeleteWow, talk about some decent Mass behavior this week! The angels are smiling upon you!
ReplyDeleteTheo's smile! Dying! And you look lovely--totally disagree that your dress flatters no one =)
ReplyDeleteYep, you pretty much described baptism to a T. My oldest was kind enough to cry through her own AND her baby sister's (who never made a peep). PS--you look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteYou are nuts, you look absolutely fabulous, I really love the dress on you.
ReplyDeleteSo happy for sweet little Theo!!
I still have post traumatic stress from my 3rd baby's baptism...they seem to get incrementally harder with other littles around :) Having nothing to wear is the first stressor, nursing a baby is the second (my 3rd did cry with the hangries during the whole ceremony) and hosting anything while running after kids is the third. So it is a trifecta! Don't know if the image 'what would a perfect mother wear/look like/greet others like' plagued you, but she is NOT invited to the next baby's baptism. And we are going to a restaurant after for brunch. It is SO worth digging into their college fund for. :)
ReplyDeleteLooking lovely as always!! And yay for little Theo! :o)
ReplyDeleteis that high anglican or catholic that i see there?
ReplyDeleteI'm only curious as I was raised in the uber high anglican church so, you know, i'd just go ahead and call us sisters if you were angli too!
xo em
Congrats to the newest Patton Catholic!! Looking lovely as always, Grace. I'm in the baptisms freak me out, too....funny enough it's always gone pretty well, however, in my mind I was on the verge of panic...not focused at all.
