She Thought She Could So She Did

I don't even know if I'm quoting that right but you know what doesn't inspire me? Inspirational quotes. Same goes for motivational quotes and motivati- you get it. Maybe ... "the mom that doesn't lose her shit over the eleventieth toddler fight of the day is a goddess" or something along the lines of, "dream smaller" or, "dream less" or, "make today ordinary" would get me all bright eyed and looking far off into the sunsetty distance of potential but the usuals ... they tend to do little. That's a lie - they do nothing. There was a huge mural on an empty storefront in a mall in New Orleans that said something about letting our setbacks and not our successes define us (novel) -- right there in between J.Crew and Anthropologie and Starbucks ... so contextual. It made me smile. What?

Anyway ... all that to say that I decided I wanted to get my hair cut like this but I couldn't find an appointment on super short notice during a time that Simon would be home and before the weekend of the zillion hour shift began and I didn't want to wait. So I watched 1.5 hair cutting tutorials on YouTube, found a pair of dull scissors and the little tiny comb they sent home from the hospital with Theo, hid in the downstairs bathroom and went to town. Following the first tutorial's instructions (flip your hair over -- put it in a ponytail and just snip off the end of the ponytail) left me with my hair looking like spaghetti noodles falling out of the bag -- jagged. By this time Sebastian had found me so I had to run and hide in his room (tripling as the guest room and the room where I keep my clothing) to keep going but Julia came and gawked so I then had to lock myself in the normal bathroom and finish it up. Anyway, I used this method and while I wanted kind of a super long (and safe) bob ... this is what we ended up with ...

Not fair because obviously the before is wet and flat and the after is curled and helped with a cardigan. I'm not saying I'll never hit up a salon again but it saved a head of lettuce and who really cares? It's not "just hair" but it is. If you hate it ... say so only using your inside your head voice.

To see a WAY cuter chops ... go see Dorian and Jessie and even though I didn't get it together enough to pound out some takes today go read Jen's and beg her to write that memoir.

Have an inspiring weekend.
Or don't.

  1. I think it is great! My only skill involves a hair clipper without any guides that leaves my husband looking somewhat like a skinhead for the first week.

  2. It looks fabulous! And I watched the exact same youtube video before I cut my hair...which didn't turn out as well as yours.

  3. Awesome!

I'm mildly jealous of my long-haired friends (can I consider women I blogstalk friends?) because I miss the versatility (I had to type that four times before the fugly red line indicating a misspell disappeared). I don't, however, miss the styling. Mine always required lots, or it go thrown in ponytails every. single. day.

I love the cut - you're so brave!!!

  4. I like it! I was wondering a couple days ago from a photo you posted if you got it cut... then I felt like a weirdo stalker for noticing. I guess I'm telling you anyway. And I'm sure it looks great without the cardigan, too!

  6. When I saw the title to this post I immediately thought it was going to be about running because I think I've seen it on a Nike poster. And I will have to admit that when I began running 3 years ago, and used to be almost dead at the beginning of my runs,it would pop into my head and I could finish my 3 miles because, I thought I could so I did. :) I guess all I need is a cheesy motivational poster or advertisement and I could probably conquer the world!

Love the hairdo. You're a pretty ballsy lady Grace. Sounds almost like it belongs on a motivational poster!

  7. you are so brave!! my roommate in college used to do that "flip over" method... but i'm a skeptic so i took my head of lettuce to the salon! looks great! good job... i'm inspired. maybe next time i'll keep my lettuce and try it myself?... maybe!? probs not.

  9. It looks gorgeous! I have been cutting my own (long-ish) hair for a year now. I invested in a $20 set of good shears from a beauty supply store, but I have saved a LOT more than that by cutting it myself. It is really easy if you have long hair. Just wet it, snip, make sure it looks even, and go! Hard to mess that up.

I even got all fancy with layers the most recent time, and it looks pretty good in the opinion of me and my fiance (aka the only opinions that matter). I cut it every 2-3 months and I have never yet watched a hair tutorial. =)

  10. Wow, gorgeous! Well done ... If I tried that, I'd look like Raggedy Ann's worst nightmare!

  11. holy crap! What CAN'T you do? Seriously.... you're too talented and I envy you. Beautiful as always. And l-o-v-eeee the way you curled it :)

  12. Whoaa looks amazing? Want to come do mine?

  13. Oh, your hair looks great, but try to find a like-minded friend. It is so much easier to cut someone else's hair straight (as in not crooked), and it's fun to do together (especially if there is wine involved). Not taking anything away from a real stylist, but that getting an appointment at the exact vortex of time when you can actually attend an appointment with little or no notice, we all know how impossible that is. My husband bought an professional set of clippers and a DVD tutorial 3 years ago and he cuts our 4 boys hair every 4 weeks or so. He has kept track in the box the clippers came in, and estimates he has saved more than $2,000 so far.

  14. Totally cut my own hair - so far no smirks at the cut...from what I can tell.

You did an awesome job....from what I can tell.

I think I may end all of sentences...from what I can tell.

It has a nice ring to it...from what I can tell.

  15. HAHA. Loovvve this!! And totally want to try it!!! :/

  16. Ummm Grace, you did that yourself?? You are my American Idol. You look gorgeous with a capital G.

  17. Wow, I can't believe you cut it yourself! It looks great.

  18. I agree with your feelings on "quotes" ....they drive me nuts! The fact you could listen to that woman on the video and still cut your hair is amazing. Your new haircut is amazing too....really cute.

  19. I am thoroughly impressed. I have always thought to just nut up and chop (or rather, trim) mine myself, but then I chicken out, or my two year old is coming at me asking to do it. How did you manage to do the back?

  20. "That is one gutsy move Mav!!" Pardon my Top Gun reference but that is impressive my friend. I have thick wavy hair and would never try to cut/trim it myself. You look lovely as always. Thank good ness for YouTube!

Have an inspired weekend...I know I will...or not! LOL!

  21. I'm with you on quotes. I think "our generation" has been saturated with that kind of crap that it just means nothing now.

And woo hoo on the hair! I cut my own hair (but it's curly, so I can just start hacking and dont have to worry about it being even) and Ted's hair. A few weeks ago we did the math and realized that we've saved over $3000 in just a few years by not going to a salon.

  22. I've been cutting my own hair for the last few months, and the only mishaps I've had weren't any worse than salon mishaps. It was much easier when it was long, but I got a little addicted to perfection and kept cutting and cutting every other day until it was shoulder length. It's much less forgiving short. Time to grow it out and chill out! :)

  23. it turned out beautiful! why spend $30+ when you can get the great results yourself? Now I would never attempt to do it because I already dislike my hair but if my hair turned out like that, I would totally do it :)

  24. You are awesome. I think I want to frame "make today ordinary". :) My husband and I are in St Louis this weekend and I keep hoping to randomly run into you... :)

  25. I was dreading scrolling down to the pictures, afraid that you had done something drastic. But it's so cute! And the thought of you running and hiding from room to room so the kids wouldn't get any ideas about cutting hair with scissors? Priceless!! In other hair-cutting news, I do all my boys at home, including the hubby. Easy-peasy. Much simpler than you would think.

  26. That is awesome! My friend cut my hair in about 10 minutes and I don't think I can stomach paying for a cut my hair is so thin. HAir dying.. now that is another story..

  27. Crap, now I have to cut my own hair. I watched the tutorial and everything. I will at least wait until tomorrow, but it is happening. Honestly, I really hope it works for me because I am kind over spending so much $ on hair cuts. Over it.

    Yours looks fantastic!

  28. My brother (the first born) is married to another first born with a doctorate in education. My sister-in-law is a doll, I couldn't ask for a better one but she has a tendency to be a bit well, um... driven. She pushes herself so hard that I coined a phrase just for her ... and I think you would appreciate it: "aspire to greater mediocrity".

  29. Looks beautiful Grace! :) I cut my hair all the time...such a time/$ saver! I use the "flip ponytail over and cut angles" method but only after I even it all out with a trim. I make sure never to put the bottom of my hair in the ponytail though (if that makes any sense) so the layers are only on top. Anyway, I will warn you that I got a little over confident with my cutting skillz and cut my little baby R's locks. It did not turn out well. Thankfully his hair grew back in quickly, but I don't think I'll be doing his again! :) Have a great weekend with your new do!

  30. You did good! I cut my own hair, and I have long layers. It's not that hard...just finding time to do it is the hardest part. Trying to get two babies to nap at the same time, while keeping one kid who doesn't nap at bay, seems to be my biggest hurdle. :)

  31. K I have to admit to finding inspirational quotes..inspiring. Still friends?

I've cut my own hair before and it looked NOTHING like yours. I bow down before your skills. And also your glorious blondey head of hair. I die over your highlights every time.

  32. Clicked over from Conversion Diary... I'm so glad to hear you are not inspired by that stuff too! There's nothing like doing a quick check of Facebook only to see a long list of sunsets with quotes written over them. I let the kids pull all the books off the shelf for that?

  33. what! it looks awesome, i can't believe you (sucessfully!) cut your own hair. impressed.

  34. Oh, I am so glad that someone else finds inspirational quotes annoying too!! The one that annoys me the most is Live, Laugh, Love. I am soooooo over that quote. Ugh! I do find a very select few underused quotes inspiring, but otherwise notsomuch. :)
And oh, I need a haircut too. Nice job!

  35. Impressive. Last time I cut my own hair I was in fourth grade. It was the day before picture day and my bangs were in my eyes, so I decided to trim them myself. They kinda looked like a jagged upside-down U. Never again.

  39. I think you did a wonderful job!!

  40. It looks great!! And I'm still super duper jealous of your hair. If you ever cut it into an actual bob, I will have to stop being your friend. Big time threat that carries a lot of consequences, I know.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think it looks gorgeous! You are a brave woman, I don't think I could ever cut my own hair!

  42. I know this post is an oldie, but I found it linked from one of your recent posts, and my mind was blown. HOLY COW, I CAN CUT MY OWN HAIR?!?! It's longer than I've ever had it in my life, and I like that, but it definitely needed a trim, and I didn't fancy spending at least $20 on a tiny trim when that's all I needed. So I followed the tutorial you posted and OMIGOSH I really love it! SO SO simple and it actually looks pretty darn good! I love you, Grace. You're too awesome. Don't ever stop posting stuff like this!
