I really do my best to keep you abreast of every waking monotonous moment of our super glitzy life. So ... welcome to the post where I think I think I might outdo myself in the reporter department. Skip it if you must.
Okay! The day after Mary's wedding we got up, I entertained the kids (fed them doughnuts that our generous and amazing hosts left out for us) while Simon packed everything (!!!!!!) and we zipped over to his parents in the grossest weather ever to drop the kids off.
Maybe it was the lingering effects of the strawberry-basil gin and tonics from the wedding talking but I almost broke down leaving the kids.
I didn't! Instead I made a bold and uncharacteristic move and shoved my phone in front of Julia's face - hoping to capture a "last memory before I selfishly leave you for a looooooooong time."
Aaaaaaaand we were off like a herd of bobcats because we are living the highest life and traveling with just one child.
One of these days I'll have to dedicate a post to Airport Simon because Airport Simon is a TREAT. He missed a flight once (again, one time) and is sufficiently scarred and will never ever ever risk missing a flight ever again - a post for another time.
All the reports from the grandparents and aunts and uncles have been favorable and Julia's meltdowns have been minimal (and if they are lying to protect the neurotic, so be it).
New Orleans is bomb. Yes, bomb. I was not aware that palm trees were native to the Big Easy?
Someone commented on an earlier post that it smells like urine and vomit -- but the palm trees, perfect weather, perfect weather, and the perfect weather are more than making up for any remaining and pungent Mardi Gross.
I'm almost feeling guilty over how much fun it's been only having Theo with us. Theo is so confused over all the attention he's getting and this bizarre one-child stroller he's been riding fancy.
He's been falling asleep (!!!!???) in the stroller - something the other two kids have never ever ever done and I've been walking to meet Simon when he has a free hour for lunch in between sessions ...
(I wanted to be brash and get a snap of an engagement photo session going on here complete with slow walk/dip and kiss action for you but ... occasionally Simon peer pressures me into acting with a smidgen of tact.)
I really need to figure out a way to bottle this getaway up into multiple containers and take a swig or 80 when the night float months and call weekends come screeching back into view because I feel really, really spoiled.
These are not from the real deal - this is a little shop inside of the River Walk which is basically like a shopping mall complete with food court and I love it. I am planning on going to the Mother Mondé and will (of course) take multiple pictures to post and share with you and yours.
And now I'm off to do whatever I want. I'm sure I'll wake up soon.

Ha..isn't it funny how when you have multiple kids, just have ONE with your, seems so EASY.
ReplyDeleteYay!! You're doing well, the kids are doing great (I'm sure!), so glad that God is rewarding you for your call weekends!
ReplyDeleteWHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAww so glad you're having a good time! Enjoy the beignets!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!! Enjoy every minute!
ReplyDeleteAHH you're in my hometown!!!! ENJOY! I miss it so much! And I am cracking up at your palm tree reference, haha. My parents got some put in their backyard, and it cracks me up every time, especially when they live literally in the swamp and have actual alligators in their backyard.
ReplyDeleteAnd did you buy that coffee? My mom ships me care packages of cafe du monde each month, haha!
Y'all have a blast!!!!
1. Basil and strawberry gin and tonics? YUM!
ReplyDelete2. I got engaged right outside that beautiful church after lighting a candle and praying for peace. PLUS, the little band outside was playing 'You are My Sunshine" which is a song with lots of family history. I smile every time I see a picture of the statue.
3. You deserve some fun and one-child-only rest!!!
New Orleans is indeed BOMB!
I remember a tri-childed friend telling me a few years ago that life is always so easy with one fewer children than your actual number. As in, if you have 3, 2 is a breeze. If you have 2, 1 is no biggie. And no matter how many you have, 0 is always the gemiest of gems.
ReplyDeleteThis post has me very excited about Airport Simon because my husband has all these different "modes" for various activities. "Business Mode" any time we clean the house, which means he no longer has time for a hug or lollygag that I so cherish. "Game Face" whenever he's playing sports (then has no time for kisses). And another mode that doesn't have a name but he gets this look in his eye every time he steps on the gas a little more in the car. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to finding out about someone else's spouse being unnecessarily intense about a task at hand.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Julia's last photo to you for a long time is a gift. Truly, a gift.

I am so glad your having a great time. My hubby loves New Orleans. He is there at least once a year for business. He says the food is da bomb! Theo look very happy as does Simon. Enjoy dear one and make sure you bring home some of that Cafe Du Monde coffee. It is out of this world good!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE NOLA! Have so much fun! It's worth it to trek to Cafe Du Monde. Seriously. Get a cab. It's not that bad if you're coming from the River Walk area/convention area.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your fun! You deserve it. (So does Theo!)
ReplyDeleteSo, so glad you're having fun!! Emailed you some sitter info. Jealous!!
ReplyDeletehave a blast! I've never been there, but it sounds like a great place to visit:)
ReplyDeleteYayyy! So glad you are having a lovely, relaxing time and thank goodness for the sunshine!
ReplyDeleteComing from someone living 3.5 hours north of NOLA: this is uncharacteristically perfect weather. We are enjoying the novelty as much as you are!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! I went to NO for Mardi Gras during spring break senior year of college and met a guy there who I ended up dating for two years...and who then gave me a dog...who I still have, 10.5 years later. Weird place ;) Have so much fun with only 1 baby!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love the airport Simon mention...Mark is the airport Nazi and likes to leave pleeeennnntttyyyy of time for everything and I am the opposite and hate waiting around (which has backfired on me many-a-time).
Have you seen the movie "Parental Guidance"? It reminds me so much of you right now! Hope you guys continue to have so much fun!
ReplyDeleteSounds like HEAVEN!! As soon as Fos is weaned, I'm planning a getaway sans babies. It just seems like the right thing to do :) Have fun!!
ReplyDeleteIt is so SO pretty here today. Really glad you're having a nice time! If you're feeling like an adventure--hop on the streetcar and head Uptown along St. Charles Ave. The oak trees and mansions are putting on a preeetty good show in this sunshine. And don't forget it's legal to carry alcohol on the street...with that small stroller, you'll have an extra hand for a mini wine bottle to-go.
ReplyDeleteSEE! I told you Kate would be a good tour guide! (And she has no idea of what I suggested to you) Kate, where's one of those drive-through margarita/daiquiri places she could experience?
Delete:)
Keep enjoying yourself and PLEASE eat a muffaletta for me ... and some New Orleans BBQ shrimp... Oh goodness, this is getting too much ...
OK you guys look like you are having tons of fun and it's a wonderful trip and you get to relax and soak up the nice weather and you all are so classy when you travel whereas I wear sweat pants yadda yadda... but I'm going to ask the one question that is on everyone's mind... Has Little J been potty trained yet? Please share.
ReplyDeleteOh, fun! Enjoy! Eat a beignet for me and soak up some of that precious sunshine!
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Thanks for sharing your trip!
Enjoy your time away!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are having fun and enjoying your getaway!
ReplyDeleteI missed a flight once. I totally understand never wanting to miss another one.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are enjoying yourself! Sounds wonderful!
If you can swing it Palace Cafe (http://www.palacecafe.com) is a MUST! We went there sans kids - sounds like Theo could totally do it though - they had this crazy apricot/pineapple cocktail that was out of this world. Food was equally excellent.
ReplyDeleteI think new orleans is one of the most romantic cities ever!! Went on 2 service trips there as a leader and all i wanted was to come backwith my then-almost-fiance!! (Noble, right?) So.much.good.food!!! Eat a beignet for me k? Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteI adore New Orleans. It is an awesome city. And I always feel like I am practically on vacay when I am able to escape the Thunderdome with only one child. So carefree, I can never understand why I didn't appreciate it more when I actually only had one child. :-)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy! I love staying at hotels!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to go to New Orleans for ages! How fun mama, I'm jealous! Enjoy yourself and the time you have together :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how being alone with just your 3rd kid is never anything like it was being alone with 1st? Why couldn't I be that relaxed and calm and giddy when I actually only had ONE child?!
ReplyDeleteI had NO idea New Orleans had palm trees! Clearly I've never been there. And Theo is so cute and chubby and lovable! Awwww.
ReplyDeletesuch cute pics !

ReplyDeleteHope you're having fun! Theo's so good, its practically like being childless in comparison.
Enjoy every moment.
We took a babymoon to good ol' NOLA and were surprised by the palm trees as well. Eat one (or a dozen) beignets for me. They are what sunny days and dreams are made of-yum!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous! We went to NOLA for our honeymoon and are looong overdue for another visit.

I'm glad you're enjoying your vacation, but it's my work day. I'm impatiently waiting for a new post to distract me! Don't feel guilty for enjoying the week. Enjoy your one on one time with Theo!
ReplyDeleteNOLA is glad to have you here! Now tell your sister Emily to come and visit us too :)
ReplyDeleteYou guys look like high fashion celebrities strolling through the airport and vacation! I usually end up taking the opp to look like trash because I don't know anyone in my vacation spot. Now you make me feel trashy.... thanks a lot G! :)
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a wonderful time!
Airport Simon story, Airport Simon story, Airport Simon story! (fists banging on table)
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding?!??!? I am just a few hours away! Dang birthday party for my son on Saturday! ;)
