what I wore and other drops of edification

Linking up with The Pleated Poppy

pants - Old Navy
minty fresh - Target
shoes - c/o Blowfish

I struggle (oh, here she goes again .... take a deep breath and listen to her wax deep and thoughtful ....) with outfit posts for the obvious reasons. They are so silly and my hair is always in my face and what am I laughing at in that top picture? Maybe I was laughing at Sebastian who came outside to watch me work it but it was probably a big fatty fake laugh. Is anyone really going to glean one ounce of inspiration from this weans + toothpaste tee (that is apparently see through and will be retired to "just for the house" pile of clothing which is 98% of my attire) combination? No. Never. And I super cringe when I think about people I know in real life happening upon one of those. I make my bed, I know I know. I do.

But! I love love love looking at other bloggers outfit posts especially the greats like Kendi and Sydney. Where am I going, where am I going .... I'm not sure. I guess I want to document some of the few times I get dressed (but neglect my hair because -- lookatit). Who knows. I can't promise I won't do any 'fit posting ever again but let's just say that we all know Kendi isn't shaking in her (super cute) crop top for fear that I'll steal her fan base. Nope, first she needs to know my name and open all those casual but cool emails I've tossed in her inbox. Wink.

Moving on.

What's going on en la vida loca today? I'll tell you what's going on. I will.

I got in the van this morning and it was clear that someone other than a Patton had gotten into it last night. They didn't steal anything but they went through Simon's car too and don't worry ... any progress I've made in the "sleep at least 23 minutes whilst Simon is on call" department these last two years is 100% out the window. I'll be sleeping with my usual block of knives but with some new additions: two sets of golf clubs - with some select clubs having been fit with spikes, mace, and a different brand of mace in case the first one is weak. Anyway, I just wish the auto predator would've stolen the coffee table in the front of the house that Sebastian single-handedly dismantled beyond repair. His boyhood should be fun.

I started watching Crazy, Stupid, Love. the other night while I was folding laundry and yes yes yes I know - it's wildly inappropriate in so many ways but I don't remember laughing out loud so many times in a row - ever. And I've seen it before. Steve Carell can deliver the one-liners. Love it. And I can't decide if Kerri Washington is going to be dethroned by Emma Stone in my girl crushing kingdom. It's a toss up and I'll let you know.

Simon was reading a book that had a word he needed me to Google to find the definition last night while I was watching the Bachelorette. Simon uses words like "porous" and "hypotenuse" in everyday conversation like I use the words "like" and "like" so you can imagine this wasn't no light reading. Anyway, we make a great team.

So I had this dream last night. Just kidding. I punish you enough around here. No dream throwing.

Bye.

  2. You write like my brain runs. Tangentially. Love it. (My husband doesn't love it. I think I started 4 different conversations with him yesterday in the course of 5 minutes.

  3. Not sure how one can speak of Crazy Stupid Love with no mention of R-Y-A-N....that's where your dream started? Dream throw at us!!!

  4. But, but... what was the word? Why the cliffhanger??

I love your style posts. Kendi is not achievable for me (crop top = cute and NO WAY, Lacey. NO WAY.), but Grace, yes, maybe (more likely, anyway)? Keep doing them, pretty please?

    1. atheneum. I think it's basically just a fancy word for a library. and I'm probably remembering wrong.

and thank you!! JUST for you though :)

    2. Yessss. I'll let everyone else partake as well. I'm magnanimous like that.

And atheneum... like library/gathering place? They renamed the faculty lounge at my (old) university that and it sounded unbelievably pretentious. Like, you guys are just watching re-runs of Law and Order in there, don't lie.

  5. I think you've captured every little thing I feel about outfit posts. I've tried, oh, I've tried to pose for my point-and-shoot so I could put up an outfit post but I JUST CAN'T. I look too ridiculous and everyone else looks so cute. Maybe just maybe you've nearly inspired me enough to put one up in a month or too. ;)

  7. Emma Stone is just the best in that movie!!

  8. What was the word? :)

I don't blame you for not sleeping. I can't sleep when Phil isn't home. I check the door locks a million times and try my best not to think about the fact that we don't live in the best neighborhood.

PS - I love the labels you have for this post.

  9. I love when Emma and Ryan try to recreate that seen from "Dirty Dancing." It was synergistic awesomeness--a great movie channeling a great movie. (I am definitely someone who's seen "Dirty Dancing" 9382 times too many.)

I'd hate to write what-I'm-wearing posts myself, BUT I'm nowhere near as photogenic or stylish as you are. The internet doesn't need to see what I'm wearing.

  10. Grace, this is so funny--as always.

I can relate to your stories about having trouble sleeping when you're alone with the kids. I remember sleeping (or trying to sleep) with bad guy-repelling weapons at the ready, too. My husband was first a Navy pilot and then he became an airline pilot--both jobs that kept him away from home a lot. Once (we had four boys aged four and under at the time), he came home from a trip and we got in bed. He reached under his pillow and said, "What the heck?..." I had a brass fireplace poker under there! :)

  11. Preach; so many Sundays I've said this is the week I post to WIWS; and I almost always talk myself out. You however have the best shoes ever; and the first picture is definitely a 'what is my crazy kid doing now smile'.
Sorry about the car predator, yuck!!

  12. Sorry about your car being rifled. I've had that, both with and without items being taken. It sucks. It's like just enough of a violation to make your skin crawl but still feel overly paranoid if you actually gorilla glue your windows shut.

Emma Stone can do no wrong in my book.

  13. I LOVE Crazy, Stupid Love. So much. And I sleep with the lights on whenever Chris isn't around and our car hasn't been broken into.

And outfit posts. I always feel so silly. You always look so beautiful!

  14. Scary about the auto thief...so sorry! I think that will kill whatever sleep I had as well.

  15. Reason # 72783639 why I love our garage. Also call weekends suck (I have one looming soon) and if I didn't already gave 5 hours of mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett waiting, I would totally be renting/ borrowing crazy stupid love- post haste.

Please keep up the outfit posts. You do them so well and I would just throw a cami under that mint shirt. Happy hour perfect ;) I actually dream about happy hour, so yeah...

  16. I highly enjoyed Crazy, Stupid, Love. And I also enjoy your outfit posts; I like that tee so much that I had to click on it and then search for it at the nearest Target (sadly it's not available). Your recount of the nights that Simon is gone was hilarious. I have spent the last two weekends in fear while Stephen worked night shift (let's just say there may have been some things piled in front of the front and side doors and I also may have slept with my pink pepper spray under my pillow).

  17. When my husband travels for work (luckily only once or twice a year for a week) I sleep with lights on, a 9 iron, a piece of pipe (I didn't choose the thug life..), and a pile of shoes (for throwing) all within arms reach. We live in a perfectly safe area and I am completely rediculous.

Also, keep up the outfit posts! You are adorable! And your outfits are cute, stylish and no matter what you say I have redic hair envy!!

  18. Always cute, Grace and we missed you at the Chief party the other night...the heat was beyond ridiculous btw. And I sleep with a metal bat when Davis is on call/on nights. You're not alone.

  20. Two things:
    1. Brian and I still cringe over that scene where the babysitter gives the son those pictures. BUT that movie IS HI-LARIOUS. We love it.
    2. Your style is more accessible to me than Kendi's. I can't wear heels that often. (BTW, are those the shoes you rave about? Kork-ease? They look great.) So, I like your outfit posts. You look 500 times more natural than I do. I've given up outfit posts at present because I can't relax, and I look like such a dope. Keep it up so I can someday copy your poses.

  21. My 90lb dog barks like she is going to tear you apart, but she is really hoping the noise she hears is the pizza delivery guy and she is just saying hurry the heck up eh;-) my neighbours love her as she is the neighbourhood watch dog, no break in's around my house.

  25. target v-necks for life! i can't get enough, i need one in every color...more if we're talking white, bc who can keep a white shirt white? (not me).

i've been slacking on the outfit posts lately, but i plan to bring them back...so that i too can die of embarassment if a real life friend/family member/coworkers stumbles upon my blog.

  26. I love that outfit and especially the jeans. My only pair of white jeans stopped fitting BEFORE baby #1 so ... maybe I can find a maternity pair for now. :)

And I pretty much always sleep with mace on my bedside table when I'm alone at night.

    ReplyDelete
  27. OK - crushing on the white pants. I need a pair like today. I will only wear them when I go out because one sneeze from Miss Courtney and a mouth full of spinach and they would be toast. LOL!

  28. Is this the reason for no Sunday Best? I always feel funny doing outfit posts because a fashionista I am not.

Sorry about your car! Maybe it also happened to neighbors? That happened here a few years ago. I think it ended up being some high school kids.

  29. The grass always being greener is so annoying. My hair is too thick to have that perfect wind swept my-hair-is-stunning-in-an-accidental-sort-of-way look. I have the thick hair you always talk about that looks nice (I guess) but is heavier than heavy. Why do I have such a crush on your hair? I stalk it like some stalk ex-boyfriends on Facebook. *sigh* Stay tuned Grace's Hair. You'll probably be getting love letters mailed to your attention soon.

  30. I sleep with a mangled softball bat next to my bed. All. The. Time. I once ran out of the house (with said bat) to chase after some sinister teenagers who had thrown an egg through our window (they're old windows, after all) when I was five months pregnant. I bet they were scared.

  31. My name is Kendi, too (true story), but I am in no way stylish enough to appropriate her ideas. Yours I can handle, although you are still a goddess to me since you have three kids and I only have two. And you have a husband in residency. And you are a gifted writer. So, yes to the outfit posts.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ah, the fake self portrait laugh. Can't say I've never done it! I actually really love your Target tee and think I'll go get one for myself. Just throw a cami on underneath and you're good to go!

  33. Best. Post. Ever. It made me laugh so hard I had to read it out loud to Frank. He laughed too and said to tell you, "I love Crazy Stupid Love, don't listen to the haters." :P

  34. yikes on the van! that is scary stuff! we can stay up all night together, cool?

and i'm so glad you are watching that movie. i most definitely girl-crush on emma stone. my father-in-law has met her and said she was super down-to-earth and easy to work with, something that can't be said for all revlon spokes-peeps (cough, cough, jessica alba, cough, cough) i told my fil that he needs to hook a sista up, so i can meet my redheaded idol. (btw, my father-in-law works at revlon. in case i confused you.)

  35. Hi.

    1. We all click the links, and she thinks to herself, she thinks, "wow what is all this traffic from Camp Patton" and then she realizes that she's got some valuable emails awaiting her.

    2. I like your outfit posts.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I absolutely loved that movie! I've only seen it once but want to see it again - I thought it was so good!

    ReplyDelete
  37. so those three kids that look like you, they were adopted right? because no way you carried and birthed children. LOOK AT DEM LEGS! my childless chubster body is envious.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh hey Grace. Fancy meeting you here.

First off -- have you sent me emails? Have they lived in my inbox for a long time and have now unjustly rotted away in that deep abyss I call email? Most likely. For that, I apologize. I'm probably an a-hole when it comes to emails -- it's me, not you, I promise. I shall search for said emails now.

Second, yes to outfit posts!!!!!!! Why? Because they are fun. Because it's not silly and you don't look stupid, no one is laughing at you and if they are, who cares? If you like your outfit, why would you not share it? You are adorable and you have great style that obviously a lot of people connect with. I see no reason not to post. Am I right? Of course, I am. Outfit posts for everyone! *throws confetti into the air*

And that is how much I love style blogging. Creepy, right?

  39. Hahaha. The last line of this post. Nothing terrifies me more than when people start recounting their dreams. "Yeah man, crazy story. Too bad it all happened IN YOUR HEAD!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  40. You look way too cute in that shirt for it to just be at 'stay at home shirt'! Wear a cami under it and you are good!

  41. Oh Grace my Internet friend. I love your blog and a big yes to outfit posts please! They are so helpful. This mama did a bad, bad thing and went to Target ,sans 3 children, and bought 3 of the shirts you are wearing. I am obsessed with tunics right now, think they are flattering for my figure, and love the drapey, flowy feel of this top. Perfect for postpartum ! Love it! Thanks a million!
