24 August 2014

a sequence + a question {for you}

Phoebe is four months old! Or was, as of yesterday. To celebrate we lived dangerously with a little bit of toddler led weaning and let Theo attempt to get some avocado in her mouth. Here's how it went down over the course of a million photos ...

(and for the Bumbo Po ... I was standing rightright there the whole time and moved her to the floor after 43 seconds ... silence those sirens)

Okay. Here we go for real ...

Phoebe loves a good fist chew and was seriously frustrating Theo so he spent a lot of his time pulling her hands out of her mouth and disciplining her via glare ...

... which worked really well
right back to it.

She played along for a minute ...

but when it was all said and spilled she may have gotten this much down the hatch ... maybe
nope.

nope, again.

and nope, for real.

and right before WWIII after I peeled him away from his prey.

the end.

of THAT.

And now a question for you (in case post title reading isn't your thing). I can't exactly hide behind the, "just had a baby!!" blogging excuse anymore and am hoping that you'll lend your reading wants and needs to my eyes and ears. In the very blessed event that Phoebe starts regularly napping when the other three nap and I can resume typing with both hands a few days a week ... what are your favorite types of posts? I'm well aware that everyone loves sponsored content (WINK, MANY WINKS) but maybe you'd prefer I just hand the reins over to Simon completely after Friday's post? Or maybe there's a whole new world of post ideas I haven't visited before? Or ...  I don't know. You tell me, pretty please!!

If you have trouble commenting (why my blog hates comments from phones will forever drive me crazy, I'm sorry!) feel free to ship an email my inbox. I'd love your input! And if you don't care, that's fair too. Completely.

And now I'm off to make Phoebe a birthday cake for the rest of us to enjoy while she chows down on a hand sandwich.

Happy Sunday.

  3. Umm I love all your posts. I actually think you do a pretty good sponsored post, I have unfollowed blogs before because they became what seemed to be only sponsored posts and really didn't write anything of interest to go along with them. You do a great job of keeping them balanced.
I am a big fan of just the funny stories that go a long with motherhood. I also have like your "health" posts. I am always looking for new ideas for healthy foods, exercise, and things like that. I know that you want to cater all of your blog posts to me, so I will be waiting with bated breath.

  5. hi grace! i'm newish to your blog and absolutely love it. LOVE IT. i'm a youngun in the city and so my life is a bit different than yours but i love your recipe posts/ baking (mis)adventures which i can totally relate too, any and all "julia says" "simon says" or "funny happenings" type post. and the theo+phoebe love affair is so cute! so i love pictures of that.

  8. Keep bogging about your life with 4 kids. I think we can all relate and let's face it - kids do and say the funniest things, and it's SO easy to forget why we had so little time when they were young. The messes they get in to, their personalities, the general life of a mom of 4 young kids is very entertaining. Keep posting about that (along with Simon and Julia says)!

  9. Julia styles! I love to hear her pearls of winsome!

  10. I was thinking the same thing about bash, he must be getting some good ones in there. Julia posts are my all time fave. I actually really appreciate the beauty tips (I've been meaning to ask for a mascara recommendation, I can't remember which one you liked in that post a while ago). My kids are getting old enough that their convos are starting to be hilarious to ease drop on... I bet yours are too. You haven't done any yummy easy snacks lately, like those date cream cheese things.... That's all I got.

  11. Julia Styles posts are my absolute favorites but I agree with the earlier comment about wanting to see some posts about Bash's comments and happenings :) I think you have a wonderful blog and I look forward to continue to read!

  12. This may sound a little, I don't know, invasive and strange? But, I've wondered what your breastfeeding stories are for all four of your little ones. You have mentioned before that you have had supply issues and some other challenges and I've just wondered how long you breastfeed each and any tips, advice or stories you may have. I know breastfeeding is a personal thing so I completely understand if you are uncomfortable writing about it! I am a first time Mom of a 3 month old and was totally blind sided at just how challenging breastfeeding can be (mastitis, blisters, a 2 week breast strike, I've had all the fun!) and I sort of enjoy reading about other moms experiences.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh gosh. I don't think I'm brave enough to dedicate a post to my battle with breastfeeding - people get so fired up on both sides. I don't have any advice ... only war stories ha. I know there are so many great posts out there with successful stories that will probably help many struggling moms! But, I haven't lasted very long with any of the kids but if we are lucky enough to have more kids I will keep trying to go as long as I can!! I think that's all we can do!

  13. I love how much Theo adores Phoebe!

As for post ideas, I always enjoy day in the life posts and Simon Says and beauty posts. Oh and outfit posts!

  14. Did you ever struggle to get your kids to eat solid foods? Ted is 16 months, still only has four teeth and is super stubborn about eating certain foods. Most of the time he won't even try it...just picks it up, examines it and chucks it across the room! Would love to hear about other experiences :-)

    1. My kids are certainly picky about some things (Theo is JUST now coming around to bananas) but there are a few things they all love (beans of any kind, corn, most fruit, cheese, rice, avocado, and I won't list everything ha) but maybe I can post about this .... thanks Kellie!!

  15. Pretty much everything. I know that's seriously unhelpful. Sorry. Julia Styles/Says posts leave me in stitches every time. I love posts that include product recommendations because I feel like I'm always buying the wrong stuff. Love Costco posts (I know) because I just got a membership and given that I don't need a lifetime supply of quinoa, what do people buy there? And what do you feed toddlers? I've got a newly minted one-year old and she wants everything on my plate. Just write about the everyday. Because whether we've got one kid or ten, life be crazy for us all. Oooh and a kids in church post. And eBay. I'm still terrified to shop there, but you always are buying shoes and awesome things for the kids. How do you know who to buy from? Etc. Okay, this is way too long. Sorry.

  18. I love toddler led weaning! Something so sweet about them interacting in a [relatively] constructive way. We have had to work on important lessons like "don't feed raisins to the baby", so now he just shows her each one before proclaiming "no, Annie" and eating it himself. If he tries to spoon feed her a look of primal fear enters her eyes!

Julia Styles & Simon Says always cheer me up. And I like your book reccomandation posts as I'm always looking for new things to read.

    1. ha! I'm cracking up over the toddler led weaning. It does kill two birds with one stone .... but Theo is always trying to feed Phoebe his almond milk .... which I don't think she minds. So terrible.

      Delete
    2. What is it with kids and almond milk? Walter won't drink chocolate milk, although he loves chocolate & milk, but if it's one of those skinny shakes made with cocoa, almond milk, and banana he's all over it.

  19. I'd like to hear how you handle church. Mass can be so stressful with just two, I don't know how you do it with 4. Any suggestions you have would be great. I would also like any tips you have on how to get in shape after having a baby.
Thanks for writing this blog. I love reading it!

    1. oh thanks Laura!!! If you sat behind us for 5 minutes at Mass you might retract that question!!! And you're too kind ... I'm still working on getting back to some semblance of pre-baby shape-age. Maybe I'll share what I've found helps me and is realistic in this busy time of life :)

  20. I love reading about how you wrangle all 4 kids to go places. I can barely wrangle the one, and he's not even walking yet. Also love anything that comes out of Julia's mouth, she's hilarious like her mom. :)

  21. I like your day in the life posts, updates on how it's going with 4 kids (also liked the 2 under 2, and 3 under 3). Am interested in preschool and if it's made things easier? or is it one more thing to do? Honestly though I just love the funny or hot mess or cute "every day" type posts. I can relate to those the most. And I am interested in what type of outlets you have for yourself? Reading books/book club, exercise sans kids, do you do stuff like that? Or is it more like go grocery shopping alone when Simon's off work? You don't talk about yourself that much.

  22. My favorite posts are definitely Julia Style posts, but I'd love day in the life posts. I have three little ones - an almost 4 year old, 2 year old, and almost 7 month old. I have no clue what to do with them and most of the time we watch way too much tv. I'd like to see what your day normally looks like or maybe a post of ideas on how to keep them entertained! Your blog makes me feel less crazy, less alone so I would appreciate thoughts from you!

  23. Conversations between Julia and Sebastian, and Simon Says :) honestly your kids are hilarious and always make my day a million times better!

  28. More Simon Says and Julia Styles!

Also would love to see some feature of Bash or Theo or Phoebe. Because they have to be just as entertaining as the rest of you, right?

  29. Keep doing what you're doing! I'm always entertained by your posts, whatever the subject.

  30. Ohhh I am excited to see some "Bash Says" or whatever clever name you give it. :)

Even though I am still single (feeling the call to marriage... one day, I hope!), I love hearing/learning about keeping relationships with your hubby in the forefront of life! I know that its uber challenging with 4 littles and Simon's residency, but I am curious what things you and Simon do to stay connected, remind each other of your love, etc. :)

  31. How in the world do you clip 4 kids worth of finger nails and toe nails? My son is 7.5 months and I trim his finger nails twice a week! I can't imagine doing it to more than 1 kid! (but, God willing, someday I will!!)

I love your blog and everything you write...so just keep going :-D

    1. HA. I do have a post somewhere in my drafts starting with something about clipping 80 nails that day. We don't do it as often as we should but it helps that Julia is totally OCD about her nails. Always asking to have them clipped and constantly cleaning underneath them .... so funny.

      But thank you!!!!

  33. I love everything you post - it is the best! Someone else already mentioned taking the whole fam to Mass - how do you guys (or should I say, how do the kids) do it? I would also love to hear more about faith, teaching the faith to your kids, etc, but realize this may not be something you're interested in as it's somewhat personal :)

And -- we really barely make it through Mass. We definitely hit up the 30 minute hospital Mass a lot esp when Simon is just off a 24 or in the middle of a shift. There are a lot of really awesome veteran Catholic moms in my "better blogs" list (Martin Family Moments, Fountains of Home, The Fike Life) that could help so much more. But I'll happily share our experiences as we go!!! Thank you!!

One suggestion though - maybe state is your giveaways are open to international readers or not. I never know if I can enter or not as I don't live in the States. 39. You could post every minute of your every day and I'd think it was amazing. I have 2 kids and can't manage 1/2 the stuff you do with your 4. (COSCO!?) I also have a husband that is around more than 6 hours a month(more like 10)...so I'm sure I'm just a bit spoiled compared to you! I just love hearing/seeing your kids interact. Mine just started to smile at each other and carry on one-sided (toddler rules) conversations. I feel like I'm getting a glimpse at my present (Phoebe & Theo) and my future (Julia & Bash) through your blog.

OH...I just thought of one. How do you manage to get such great photos of your kids/self all the time. As a DSLR wanna be photog...I always end up just missing the mark.

I also love that your posts generally come thru later in the day; just as i've hit a wall around here....ah, a post from Grace! Motivation! It often helps me change my perspective and to just take a deep breath.

  46. How about a house tour? Too creepy? I'd settle for just a play by play on how bedtime goes down in your house. Or a list of what's in your netflix/amazon cue for trashy reality tv.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I miss when you did "Seven Quick Takes" on Fridays. I really loved those posts! I'd also love to see a post on 3 kids vs. 4 and how things are easier/harder. I've heard people say that 4 is actually easier than 3 and I'm wondering if you've found that to be true. I always love when you share humorous accounts of the crazy things going on in your house. I can really relate to those. Also, I'm really curious about what it's like being married to someone who delivers babies for a living. I'm sure you can't share too much about Simon's patients but I'd love to hear more about some of the experiences he's had. I'm sure he has some hilarious stories.

  49. I'd love to hear more about your college years or any nostalgic stories you may have (mostly because that's where I'm at in my life, but ya know). That's a little personal so I totes understand if that's not your thing. I'm going to keep reading your blog regardless, so whatever you do would be fantastic! I, likewise to some previous comments, appreciate Julia Styles and Simon Says, but I also love when you talk about going to mass and the mass grades.

    ReplyDelete
  50. One word: marriage. And I know that's probably the most personal of all and I know that's something that you and Simon would have to very much be on the same page about, but the past year as a first time parent while Jacob was in a crazy intense year of graduate work meant our young marriage took a beater and we are realizing now what kind of work we need to put into it simply for "us time." I guess how do you and Simon stay connected? How do you keep marriage a priority especially when kids are so time consuming? Would love some more insight into that part of your world. All the best!

I love reading about 'crazy life phase with just little kids' posts, I mean I still have little kids too and medium kids and big kids and adult 'kids' but..reading about crazy life with just little ones makes me nostalgic and treasure my little ones a little more cause sometimes they can get a little lost in my crazy life with all types of kids phase.

This is maybe a little too personal, but I'd love to hear how you balance being a stay at home mom with four little ones while your husband is still in school. My husband is in PhD school and we have two little ones. It's hard to make ends meet sometimes and I'd love to hear any tips you have!

  59. Just to jump on the band wagon, over here we love Julia Styles. There's a totally normal (questionable) series of texts that get sent among a large group of college ladies to alert each other as soon as one goes up. We also always love a good video!

  60. Grace, I'm coming at this from a different perspective - I was you 40 years ago . . . Loved (most) every minute of my 13 year 'maternity leave' and so enjoy the glimpse you give us of how you are coping. Back then there was no Internet or blogs so I sporadically kept a journal - always thought one day it might be a book! Keep on writing whatever the Spirit inspires. . . you have a captive audience!

  66. I second the requests for marriage advice and nostalgic college stories, as well as general stories of you and Simon growing up! Your fam sounds so great (as does Simon's) and it would be fun to hear about how your parents did things when you were kids. I'm sure there's some pretty hilarious memories!

Also, this might be more of a guest post from your mom, but I would love to hear about your parents' experiences in the Integrated Humanities Program. I've heard so many cool and interesting things about that program, but never a first-hand account from someone who was in it.

  67. I love some Julia convos. She is too funny!

  68. I say the more personal you get, the better! I love when bloggers dig deep down into their personal lives...or talk about things we wouldn't think you'd talk about...like how much money you make blogging! Ok, I sound like a freaky stalker maybe...but I think others would agree with me that that stuff is interesting to read.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i love julia coversations, and just hearing about your daily strggles to get kids out of the house, etc, you are so funny and cathartic. and i love your survival tips (sooo helpful), and pix of your adorable kids, and you and simon with the kids too, and your ramblings about life, and even your residency posts...and the pictures of the kids at Simon's work. Tell Simon there should be more pictures of you adn the kids :)
I guess what comes through all of the chaotic posts, is the grace of God, and how much love there is in your family, all mixed up with kid messes and the craziness.
It seriously makes me feel like there is hope for this earth after all....
I love your blog. All of it. I know this is kinda weird, since we've never met, but I love your family.
God grace comes through your blog, it really does.

  70. Looks like I'm late to the game and everyone already took my answer: Julia Styles and Simon Says for the win. And I just love your humorous writing in general.
Maybe a post on what it's like to be the wife of an OB (in residency). There's lots out there on personal preference and "why I had this type birth" - it'd be interesting how much Simon contributes to the whole pregnancy/delivery decisions since a fair amount of husbands are generally clueless when it comes to these things.

  78. Remember one time you said that "4 kids is easier than 2, I promise!" ?? I want to know more about that! Because mine are a barely 2 year old and an almost 8 month old and I want a few more! But some DAYS man, I tell you. SO. It would be really interesting and informational to hear about the differences between 1 kid, then 2 kids, then 3 kids, then 4, you know what I mean? What was harder/easier about each stage of your family? Got any tips as my family grows?

I'm counting on you, Grace, NO PRESSURE :)

  81. How to survive residency, keeps your kids alive, and still like your spouse? ; ) I'm married to a first year resident, so our long journey has just begun! Survive? I think we can. Thrive? Probably not. You're a complete trooper and I'd love to hear if you and Simon have any practical tips and tricks or traditions that help your family trudge through the missed holidays, long days, non-existent date nights...thanks!!
